Family-Friendly Spaces
2024 Updates

2024 was our 9th summer implementing our Family-Friendly Spaces (FFS) program. We are proud to announce, this year 55 spaces opened their doors to over 2,000 children of workers in the supply chain. This year is especially important for us. For the first time, we opened childcare spaces in communities, in addition to the in-factory facilities we have facilitated since 2016. Out of the 55 spaces offered this year, four were community-based.

Our Family-Friendly Spaces program provides secure and well-equipped spaces, at factories and in communities, for children to learn and play while their parents work. The program promotes child-friendly employment practices, supports the United Nations SDGs: 3, 4, 5, 10 & 17 and allows parents to work free from the expense and burden of childcare.

The Family-Friendly Spaces program not only benefits workers and their families, but is proven to produce measurable business benefits for factories including improved worker retention rates, reduced training costs and becoming the employer of choice in their communities.

Week 4: Summer LEGO Building Competition

To create more unforgettable memories this summer, we've planned a LEGO building competition with exciting prizes. The competition includes two categories: the "Animal Guardian Challenge" and the "Dream Building Challenge".

In the Animal Guardian Challenge, the children are tasked with building a home for homeless animals. Meanwhile, the Dream Building Challenge invites children to construct their dream home or job using LEGO bricks. To recognize and encourage the dedication of each FFS teacher, we have also introduced the "Excellence in Teaching Award". This award encourages teachers to creatively use the Family-Friendly Space handbook to design more engaging and educational lesson plans, inspiring a love of learning in the children.

These competitions not only stimulate the children's imagination and creativity but also help them learn and grow through play. We'll be revealing the winners next week, so stay tuned!

Week 3: Learning Through Play in a Safe and Caring Space

With joy & laughter filling our spaces, we welcome the third week of the Family-Friendly Spaces program. This week, the children enjoyed a wide range of activities, including an excursion exploring nature!

Our sponsors generously provided more toys for the children including colouring pencils and crayons, enabling them to further explore their creativity. At this point in the program, the children are familiar with the Spaces, their teachers and classmates, making the Spaces even more warm and inviting.

The factories organized a series of engaging activities, including pottery workshops where the children made their own clay creations, and craft workshops where they learned about the traditional Chinese art of tie-dyeing, a tradition that dates back over 1,000 years. They also enjoyed outdoor sports, including basketball and exploring the wonders of nature.

The teachers took the children to museums, organized movie outings, and visited a water park to cool off in the summer heat. Additionally, some factories arranged tours of their production lines, allowing the children to see the manufacturing process and gain a better understanding of their parents' work.

We hope that through these well-planned activities, the children will have a fulfilling and meaningful summer!

Week 2: Explore, Play, and Family Time

As we enter the second week of the Family-Friendly Spaces Program, we are delighted to share that the factories have been filled with exciting games and parent-child activities. These activities enable children to build closer relationships with their parents while gaining new knowledge and developing skills.

The teachers in the Family-Friendly Spaces have been encouraging the children to unleash their creativity through activities like building with blocks, solving puzzles, and painting. While engaging in these games, children learn to play with each other, build friendships, and develop motor neurone skills.

Across the 55 spaces, there were many exciting activities: some children explored local playgrounds, some visited the fire station to learn about fire safety, and others learnt about the process of making traditional food. There were also different parent-child activities organised, such as family lunches and parent-child reading time, allowing working parents to strengthen the bond with their children in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

These activities help to build a fun and memorable summer for the children, allowing them to create precious memories with their parents. We are deeply grateful to all program leaders and teachers for providing the participants with such a spectacular week!

Week 1: Opening Ceremony of the Family-Friendly Spaces Program

This week, factories participating in theFamily-Friendly Spaces program have held opening ceremonies to mark the official beginning of the summer program.

Family-Friendly Spaces aim to help supply chain workers with summer childcare challenges while providing children with a safe, fun and educational space in which to socialise and learn.

The opening ceremonies began with speeches from factory leaders, ESCP representatives, and program sponsors, giving an overview of the learning and activities planned for the children this summer. During the event, guests and children played with the donated toys together, experiencing the joy of learning through play.

Sponsors of the program have donated a variety of toys and interactive games, enabling the children to play with each other and filling the spaces with joy and laughter. Through these toys and engaging activities and under the guidance of the teachers, the children were able to explore their creativity and develop teamwork skills.

The generous sponsorship from Mattel, Hape, Hallmark, LEGO®, GDTEX &Futuretex, Macy's, TÜV Rheinland, Moose Toys, Sainsbury's, Crayola, Superdry, Disney, the Marketing Store and Spin Master will help to make this summer extra memorable. We sincerely appreciate their contributions to making this summer an unforgettable one for the children.

Special thanks this year to GDTEX & Futuretex!

We would like to extend thanks to GDTEX and Futuretex, certified by the Ethical Supply Chain Program, for their generous sponsorship of the Family-Friendly Spaces t-shirts this year. They have provided over 2,000 t-shirts to the teachers, program leaders and children involved in the Family-Friendly Spaces program this year. Thank you!
